Paula Christenson

Paula Christenson is an Argentine American abstract artist whose paintings emerge from a dynamic conversation between intuition and structure. Working primarily in acrylic, she creates compositions that begin spontaneously and evolve through a process of discovery, refinement, and visual problem-solving.

Christenson did not arrive at abstraction through theory, but through a search for freedom. After years of painting figurative work, particularly faces, she found herself increasingly drawn to the possibilities of abstraction. During long nights in the studio, searching for her own artistic voice, she began drawing lines across the canvas. What started as a simple gesture gradually became something more complex: a visual equation demanding resolution.

The lines created relationships, tensions, and pathways. As she responded to them, forms began to emerge. Shapes suggested figures, landscapes, organisms, and structures that seemed to reveal themselves through the process rather than through conscious planning.

For Christenson, the act of painting is both intuitive and analytical. While color choices are often determined before she begins, the composition itself unfolds organically. The work develops through spontaneous mark-making, followed by careful observation and technical refinement. Throughout the process, she searches for balance, rhythm, movement, and visual harmony.

Many of her paintings contain forms that appear simultaneously familiar and elusive. Viewers may recognize traces of nature, architecture, human figures, or imagined entities without ever arriving at a fixed narrative. Christenson herself speaks of connecting with the forms that emerge as she works, allowing the painting to guide its own evolution.

Her process extends beyond the studio. Inspired by the physicality of artists such as Cy Twombly, Christenson often creates her own tools and brushes, incorporating natural elements gathered outdoors. Leaves, sticks, and other found materials become instruments for making marks, textures, and impressions. Each tool produces a distinct visual language and carries its own emotional resonance.

Born and educated in Argentina, Christenson holds a bachelor's degree in education and later earned a Certificate of Achievement in Painting from the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. While her background in education informs her sensitivity to communication and perception, painting remains the place where she feels most unrestricted.

Living and working in the United States, Christenson often reflects on the limitations of language as a non-native English speaker. Though her ability to communicate in English is excellent, within the visual language of painting she experiences complete freedom. The canvas becomes a space where expression exists beyond words, allowing intuition, emotion, and imagination to move without constraint.

The result is a body of work that feels simultaneously playful and sophisticated, spontaneous and deliberate. Through color, gesture, and form, Christenson invites viewers into richly layered worlds that reward close looking and encourage personal interpretation.
