Andrés Conde is a Cuban-American painter known for his narrative realism, distinctive portrayals of women, and the ongoing SOCIAL series, a project exploring memory, identity, nostalgia, and Cuban cultural history through imagined magazine covers and visual storytelling.

Surface & Subtext presents both the art and the ephemera of a life lived across continents, tracing the evolution of an artist who insists that beauty can confront history, and that painting can witness both chaos and renewal.

Originally published in 2016, writer John Sevigny examines a shift away from spectacle-driven contemporary art and argues for a renewed appreciation of representation, technical mastery, and the human figure, highlighting artists represented by Conde Contemporary.
