Andrés Conde

Andrés Conde was uprooted from Havana as a child and brought to New York by way of Madrid in 1979. The family eventually settled in Miami. The contrasts in art, architecture, and culture between Havana and Madrid, Madrid and New York, then New York and Miami had a profound visual impact on the young artist and continue to inform his work today.

Conde studied commercial art and graduated from the University of Miami. His earliest paintings on canvas leaned heavily toward pop, revealing his strong affinity for graphic design and commercial imagery. The most notable of these early series, Pop Revolution: When the Image Outlives the Ideology, examined the enduring power of political iconography in Cuba. The recurring image referenced in the series was Ernesto “Che” Guevara, whose likeness became both symbol and spectacle within the work. In the painting Siete Años Para El Che (Seven Years for Che), Guevara’s well known portrait is constructed from the handwritten names of prisons and labor camps where Conde’s father was held for seven years.

A turning point in Conde’s work came after a meeting with painter Itzchak Tarkay at the artist’s Miami studio in 1997. Tarkay, a Holocaust survivor known for his luminous paintings of women, asked Conde why he painted such confrontational images. Conde responded, “Because I’m angry.” Tarkay smiled and replied, “Paint something beautiful. Paint your wife.” The conversation marked a profound shift in Conde’s approach to subject matter.

With his ongoing series SOCIAL, Conde continues to create work that is both visually seductive and psychologically layered. The artist is in the process of creating 240 imagined covers for the iconic Cuban magazine SOCIAL, often referred to as the “Vanity Fair” of Cuba. Though the publication ceased in 1938, Conde reimagines it continuing through the years leading up to the Cuban Revolution, symbolically closing its doors again in 1959.

Conde has become best known for his paintings of women, whose presence in the work often conveys both strength and vulnerability simultaneously. His fascination with the feminine extends beyond the sensual, reflecting a deep admiration for women as emotional and psychological anchors within his narratives. In the series Días de Un Futuro Pasado (Days of a Future Past), Conde frequently depicts celebrations suspended somewhere between the 1930s and 1950s. The viewer’s attention is consistently drawn toward the women in the compositions, while the men, though present, remain secondary figures within the atmosphere of the scene.

The artist lives and works in Natchez, Mississippi.

His work can be found in collections throughout North and South America, France, Germany, and the Caribbean.
